EAA’s Attic — Joe Engle’s College Binder

EAA’s Attic — Joe Engle’s College Binder

This piece originally ran in the May 2024 issue of EAA Sport Aviation magazine.

Even astronauts feel a sense of pride toward their alma mater! NASA astronaut Joe Engle, EAA 390011, grew up in Chapman, Kansas, and eventually earned his Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Kansas in 1955. This binder, from when he attended the University of Kansas, is branded with the university mascot, the Jayhawk. Inside the binder is an assignment from the course KU-103, Aircraft Design. Engle received an A- on the assignment, with his professor noting that while it was “very neatly done,” his spelling could be improved upon.
