Because of the Elgin Wells, Jr. Starjammer CFI Scholarship, during these unprecedented times I was able to secure a flight instructing job.
Currently, I am responsible for training students in ATP’s Airline Career Pilot Program (ACPP) and Arizona State University’s Professional Flight programs. I prepare them for FAA practical exams so they can earn their pilot certificates. I make safety-focused decisions, instill consistent professionalism, and help students achieve their potential in both the classroom and the cockpit.
Not only does instructing keep me flying, but it is rewarding in the sense that I get the chance to interact with people from all walks of life, play a part in helping someone reach their goals, and often be their first impression into the world of aviation. Most importantly, as a CFI, I am a critical part of the aviation safety system. I am on the frontlines of safety, setting procedures and safety standards not only for myself, but also for my students.
Receiving an EAA flight training scholarship has allowed me to learn and take my career to the next level by teaching the next generation of pilots. Through my short time instructing I’ve already learned that great pilots elevate their presence in their surroundings and immerse themselves in the industry. They want to learn and understand what their airplane is telling them. They know how to remain calm even when surrounded by chaos. They use kindness and humor to teach others around them.
I am so grateful to EAA and the Elgin Wells, Jr. Starjammer CFI Scholarship donors. Not only did I receive financial assistance to complete my CFI rating, but throughout the process I have experienced, learned, and grown tremendously as a pilot. Even during these “virtual” times, I am so grateful to be part of such a supportive aviation community and have the opportunity to give my time to wonderful organizations like EAA.
This scholarship has helped me get my future off the ground and I appreciate everything that EAA does not only for students, but the aviation community as a whole.
