Cub Weathervanes Aid Chapter 898 Scholarship Fund

We’ve all seen the standard weathervanes, some featuring roosters, but what about ones with a Cub on top? Robert Newman, EAA 153337, is raising money for EAA Chapter 898’s scholarship fund in an artful way.

Robert came up with the idea to build these weathervanes featuring a Cub on top a few years ago to be used as teaching aids in an adult builders program he was leading through EAA.

In the beginning, the weathervanes were built for a few family and friends, until an article was published in General Aviation News magazine in January.

“Since then, we have raised more than $5,000 selling these Cubs throughout the country,” he said.

Robert realized, with chapter support, that this was a great way to raise money for the chapter’s scholarship fund.

To date, Robert has built and sold more than 30 Cubs with the help of fellow EAA Chapter 898 members.

“It takes me approximately 20 hours to build the basic Cub, about 30 hours for the float version,” he said.

Robert said at this time he is only building and selling Cub weathervanes. Each weathervane can be customized to the customer’s color and lettering preference, and come handmade with or without floats.

“The basic model, yellow Cub with black lightning bolt, is $150, float plane is $200,” Robert said. “Custom plane prices are determined at the time of ordering. Of course, shipping costs vary and are, therefore determined upon shipping UPS.”
