EAA’s Attic — Rokuohsha Type 89 Camera Gun

This piece originally ran in the July 2023 issue of EAA Sport Aviation magazine.

This machine gun-like camera was designed to train Japanese aircraft gunners. When the trigger was pulled, the camera would begin taking pictures of a target on 35 mm film housed in a small internal magazine. An optical stopwatch fitted in the clear housing at the front recorded time onto the film by means of a prism. The “gun” could be mounted in either a wing mount or gun emplacement.
