Solo Milestone: Ray Aviation Scholar TJ Hess

Solo Milestone: Ray Aviation Scholar TJ Hess

By Jeff Hess, EAA 1505814, EAA Chapter 586

Congratulations to TJ Hess, EAA 1366493, for his first private pilot solo on November 11! It was a great day for him to undertake this amazing milestone in his aviation career. The weather was perfect… no wind, cool temperatures, and not a cloud in sight.

The morning began with a brief from his flight instructor, Kolton Soloman. TJ and Kolton then hopped in the C172, and TJ demonstrated his ability to take off and land, control the aircraft, and make proper decisions, all under Kolton’s watchful eye. Once Kolton determined it was a go, Kolton and TJ taxied back to the hangar, they completed some paperwork, and TJ was sent out on his first series of solo flights in the pattern.

TJ took to the sky by himself for the first time in the C172. He completed his requirements for a first solo fight by carrying out three takeoffs and landings. Once safely back on the ground, congratulations were expressed and the shirt-cutting ceremony commenced.

Already holding a glider certificate, which he achieved on his 16th birthday, TJ is well on his way to attaining his dream of becoming a private pilot on his 17th birthday in February 2026. After achieving his PPL, TJ plans to continue his aero education by becoming instrument rated and has set a goal to become a CFI on his 18th birthday!

TJ can’t express how much he appreciates the Show Low, Arizona, EAA Chapter 586. The membership has embraced him and they have made him an integral part of the chapter. TJ has been tapped to maintain the flight simulators, give lectures at the meetings, and help engage the youths. TJ is always willing to be called upon when needed.

TJ would like to attend the Air Force Academy, and he’s hoping his love and knowledge of aviation will help him stand out during the application process. His ultimate goal is to fly the big transport airplanes during a career in the Air Force … TJ is well on his way!
