Open Cockpit Video Camera Mount – I Made it Myself!

Open Cockpit Video Camera Mount – I Made it Myself!

When I flew the Sonerai with the J3300 engine I had my friends Leo and Nora take video. The airplane is so small and fast, one can’t see it well. So with COVID-19 lockdowns and time on my hands, I decided to make a camera mount for my Bakeng Deuce.

—Bought a sheet of 3/16 micarta. Cut it into six pieces 4 inches by 6 inches. Used epoxy to glue them together. Then cut it into sections to fit a wing strut.

—Got some hardware and a tripod. With the lathe, I made up a fitting to attach the tripod adapter to the micarta block. The tripod swivels on three axes.

—I had some shrink wrap, so I used that to make a rubber insert between the mount and the strut. It fits exactly.

The idea is to mount it within reach of the cockpit then switch it on say at takeoff or just for landing. It’s nice to have open cockpit video in the dead of winter. It took me three days to complete the mount

  1. Make the block.
  2. Fit the block to strut and drill for bolts.
  3. Everything else.

It just fits into my small camera bag.

I thought you might like to see my solution to getting home at the end of a busy day working in the hangar.  I bring my home with me!
